Hurricane Dorian has left a path of catastrophic damage in the Bahamas. As a Category 5 hurricane, Dorian flattened entire communities, destroyed roads and left portions of the island nation under water. The scale of destruction from the strong winds and massive storm surge is yet to be fully known but initial assessments indicate significant infrastructure damage and over 60,000 people in need of immediate assistance.

Americares mobilized resources ahead of landfall and has a response team on the ground to meet urgent health needs. Given the magnitude of the disaster, Americares response is likely to include the deployment of emergency medical teams, distribution of medicines and medical supplies, restoration of health services and delivery of mental health and psychosocial support. Americares response team is working closely with local, national and regional authorities on this immediate response and is already anticipating a long recovery.

For over 40 years, Americares has helped communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters in the U.S. and around the world. Each year, we respond to an average of 30 natural disasters and humanitarian crises, establish long-term recovery projects and bring disaster preparedness programs to vulnerable communities.
