Americares is responding to Hurricane Michael, the most powerful storm to hit the Florida Panhandle in the area's history. Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida as a life-threatening Category 4 storm, delivering a catastrophic impact with peak winds of 155 mph, dangerous rains and deadly storm surge. The storm slammed the Florida Panhandle mid-day October 10, leaving a path of near total devastation and at least 18 fatalities with extensive damage to infrastructure including health facilities. It made its way into Georgia as a Category 2 storm and then on to the Carolinas, still reeling from the floods of Hurricane Florence.
As residents of the Panhandle confront the scale of the destruction, Americares is already working with partners in the area and deploying an emergency team to provide immediate support for health care in the aftermath of the storm. With reports coming in about damaged health facilities along the Florida coast, the full extent of the damage to the health system is still being assessed and needs are being identified.
Americares has a long history of responding to disasters. We respond to an average of 30 disasters each year, and, as we help survivors of Hurricane Florence, we continue providing relief to communities affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
